What I’ve Learned from My Dog
I’ve always believed that my dog has her own mind, especially when we go out for a walk. Every morning, we both get ourselves ready, I get dressed while she stretches, yawns and vocalizes that it’s time to go. I give her a quick massage to warm things up and then we’re off. When we finally get outside, she will often sit down and just observe her world, seemingly without any urgent need or desire to do her business. At first it was perplexing. Doesn’t she need to use the bathroom after sleeping for eight or more hours? I always wondered, what is she watching? Why is she just sitting there?
Our dogs are special sentient beings that give us unconditional love. I believe they are special souls who come into our lives to teach us how to love unconditionally and live in the moment.
When my dog sits and observes her world, she is trying to tell me something. “Stop Mom and do what I’m doing. Just be in the moment Mom.” She’s not worried or obsessed with using the bathroom or walking on to the next spot to smell. She just lives in the moment and takes the time to observe her world and to greet each human and dog that she sees. A walk is not just her time to use the bathroom, it is her time to connect with her world and with the people around her. I believe her mission is not only to teach unconditional love and to live in the moment, but it is to bring happiness and joy to each human she meets and show them love and kindness. When she greets each person, I can see their joy and happiness as she interacts with them, and I know she enjoys the love she receives back.
Many believe there is a soul connection between dogs and their humans, a deep connection on a spiritual and energetic level. Maybe you’ve noticed that your dog mirrors how you feel physically and emotionally. Does your dog seem stressed when you are stressed? Or happy when you’re happy? Do they come and stay close to you when you’re not feeling well? Animals are much more sensitive to energy than humans, so it’s no wonder they can tell when we are stressed, sad, or just feel bad. The animal-human connection is one that is deep, strong, purposeful and meaningful. If we nurture that connection, keep our hearts open and listen to our dogs, it can be a transformative experience.
What is your dog’s purpose? I believe that each dog is placed in our path for a reason. Perhaps your dog came at a time when you needed extra love and companionship, or after you suffered a great loss, or when you were struggling through an illness. Maybe your dog is here to teach you something that you need to learn about yourself and about how you live each day. We can learn so much from our dogs and other animal companions, so take the time to be in the moment with your dog, spend time with them, observe them with love, and connect to them with your heart.
